Accounting and International Business Co-Major

Terry College of Business
Degree Type: B.B.A.

The major in Accounting is designed to give the student an understanding of the theory of accounting as it is used in our society. All accounting majors must take 24 hours of required courses.

A growing number of foreign and U.S. companies transact a significant portion of their business through international channels. More and more businesses must go abroad to find new markets as domestic markets mature. Even those corporations conducting business strictly in this country have to compete with foreign imports and for foreign labor. As a result, major corporations that are taking advantage of international opportunities have a competitive edge.

The Terry College of Business has designed its International Business Program to provide opportunities for students to gain the knowledge and skills required for international business careers. The program also assists students in developing an understanding of the business processes and institutions of the international economy.

The curriculum is designed to develop a deep knowledge of a functional area as well as a strong concentration in a foreign language. In addition to the basic undergraduate business curriculum, international business co-majors are also required to take three of the following courses: The International Business Environment (ECON 4040), International Finance (FINA 4810), Internship in International Business (INTB 4800), International Legal Transactions for Business (LEGL 4900), International Strategic Management (MGMT 5560), International Marketing (MARK 4700), and Globalization and IT (MIST 5780). In addition to the BBA requirements, all students co-majoring in International Business must satisfy an international immersion requirement, such as a study abroad program, an internship in International Business, or additional foreign languages.

With careful planning, students can complete the co-major within the current 121 hours required for graduation. For further information, go to http://www.terry.uga.edu/ib/requirements.html

Ecology

Odum School of Ecology
Degree Type: B.S.

Ecology, the study of organisms and their environment, is an interdisciplinary science. Ecologists work at the interface of basic science fields such as biology, geology, chemistry, and mathematics, and may draw more broadly on subjects such as economics, public policy, environmental law, anthropology, and geography. There is a growing need to understand how organisms and the environment interact and to examine the influence of humans on the earth and its biodiversity.

This degree is designed mainly to prepare undergraduates for advanced graduate studies in ecology or allied applied disciplines leading to a Masters or Doctoral degree. Students planning to finish their studies at the B.S. level should discuss this with an advisor as soon as possible to design an appropriate program of study.

Students may elect to expand their experience through study abroad programs, internships with the Institute of Ecology or other sponsors, or independent research opportunities. These activities are strongly encouraged but are not required for the degree.

Pre-Dentistry

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: Pre-Professional

General Information for Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry and Pre-Optometry The Premedical Studies Program 111 Memorial Hall http://premed.uga.edu/ In almost all cases, baccalaureate degrees are required for admission to schools of medicine, dentistry and optometry. At the University of Georgia, "premed," "predental," and "preoptometry" are not majors, so students who plan to attend medical, dental, or optometry school should select majors that follow established degree programs. There is no one "best" major for students interested in these areas, but it is critical that course selection includes both those science courses needed to assure a competitive score on the standardized admissions tests and the course prerequisites for admission to the medical, dental or optometry schools to which the student is interested in applying.

The primary focus of the Premedical Studies Program is to work with juniors and seniors who are going through the important testing, application, and admission process. All students are invited to the group enrollment orientation offered several times in the fall and spring and usually once in the summer. The orientation addresses where course admission requirements can be found, specific requirements for several medical, dental, optometry and osteopathic schools, how specific courses are helpful, national application services, statistics on the most recent accepted applicant pools including national admission test scores, qualities of successful applicants, resources for volunteering and shadowing, services of the Program, and the importance of a clean background check.

Because students may choose any major or program of study, it is important to be aware that the Premedical Studies Program has confidence in the knowledge of the University of Georgia premed liaisons in the schools and colleges across campus in providing assistance in registering first and second year students for classes.

Economics and International Business Co-Major

Terry College of Business
Degree Type: B.B.A.

Economics is the study of resource allocation by individuals, business enterprises, and nations. A social science, it forms the foundation for understanding the various business disciplines. Its study combines analytical, empirical, and historical methods to reveal how an economy functions. This department offers a wide range of courses providing students with both breadth and depth in the subject. Economics gives a valuable preparation for careers in corporate, governmental, and consulting positions within the United States and internationally. It is an excellent major for those planning to attend law school; those contemplating an MBA degree will find that such programs consider economics majors highly desirable applicants. The field also prepares students for work in public administration, international business, and financial analysis.

Interdisciplinary Writing Certificate

Degree Type: Certificate

Writing is a critical skill in all fields and professions. The Interdisciplinary Writing Certificate Program gives undergraduate students from all colleges and majors at the University of Georgia an opportunity to develop and document their writing skills as they progress through their academic careers. Their writing skills will be developed in the context of their particular disciplines and be documented in a published ePortfolio that presents and reflects on the students' writing projects and experiences. The writing done for the program will form a record of the students' critical thinking, research, and communication skills, and highlight their understanding of conventions of writing within their chosen fields. The certificate will provide, through the ePortfolio, evidence for outside evaluators (e.g. admissions committees or employers) of students' written communication skills.

Educational Psychology and Instructional Technology Certificate

College of Education
Degree Type: Certificate

The integration of technological tools into the educational system has created a large demand for pre-service teacher training in the use of educational technologies. All teachers in the state of Georgia are required to have some basic knowledge of the use of educational technologies. Rarely do they have substantial exposure to the full range of issues related to technology and society. The Educational Psychology and Instructional Technology Certificate seeks to expand the undergraduate training of pre-service teachers to promote a more thoughtful and systematic view of the influence and use of technological tools in schools. This will include the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of technology-based products. Moreover, it will provide avenues for the investigation of the pedagogical implications of technological artifacts, and their part in a multicultural/democratic educational system. The sequence of courses proposed by this certificate addresses these objectives. These courses provided a comprehensive analysis of educational technologies, while requiring students to collaborate with schools and other organizations in implementing their educational products.

Pre-Law

Degree Type: Pre-Professional

As a student at the University of Georgia, it is important to understand that UGA does not have a pre-law major, per se. Therefore, you cannot declare pre-law as your major, nor can you graduate from UGA with a pre-law degree. However, as an incoming student, it is useful to inform your academic advisor that you intend to go to law school because this may help your advisor direct you to courses and events that may be beneficial to someone intending to go to law school. Regardless of the major that you choose, or the school or college that you eventually become a part of, you are encouraged to continue to seek advice and assistance available through the pre-law advisor.

The mission of the Prelaw Advising Office is to provide timely and accurate advice to students considering application to colleges of law. For those students who elect to apply to law school, the office will work with students to select the most appropriate schools for application and subsequently to maximize the student's chances for admission into the college of their choice. The Pre-Law Advising Office believes that every student should have access to the best possible information which will allow them to make intelligent decisions during the application process. For more detailed information about the pre-law program available to University of Georgia students, see: http://prelaw.uga.edu. Because students may choose any major or program of study, it is important to be aware that the Pre-Law Advising Office has confidence in the knowledge of the University of Georgia prelaw liaisons in the schools and colleges across campus:

Archaeological Sciences Certificate

College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: Certificate

Archaeology, by its very nature, is interdisciplinary, and the development of more and more scientific applications has increased this characteristic. Indeed, today, the archaeological sciences permeate modern archaeological research. It is no longer possible to study archaeology without being familiar with an often bewildering and steadily increasing variety of scientific applications, including GIS, palynology, stable isotope analysis, chemical analysis of glazes, and a variety of dating techniques, such as TMS, TL, OSL, AMS radiocarbon. On the UGA campus, there is significant interest in archaeology and its scientific applications among students in anthropology, art, biology, classics, ecology, forestry, geography, and geology. The goal of the CPAS is to consolidate and coordinate the archaeology curriculum so as to facilitate broader participation from across campus and expose students to the true scope of archaeology as a discipline.

Entomology

College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences
Degree Type: B.S.E.S.

Worldwide, insects destroy about one-third of the food and fiber we produce, and they transmit some of the most devastating pathogens of plants and animals. On the other hand, insects pollinate many valuable food and forest crops, significantly increase the productivity of soils, and are important components in most food chains. A graduate in Entomology should have a strong background in general biology and an understanding of the scientific method. Students learn to identify insects and other arthropods and study the biology and ecology of pests and beneficial insects in order to manage them efficiently. They should acquire a basic knowledge of agricultural production principles and how insects influence crop production. Students should also become knowledgeable about the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on insect development, population growth, species interactions, physiological requirements, and insect behavior.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine (B.S.A.)

College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences
Degree Type: Pre-Professional

Admission to the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine requires a rigorous program of undergraduate study in the basic sciences. Students are encouraged to plan their program of undergraduate study carefully so that they will receive a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture whether or not they are later admitted to the College of Veterinary Medicine. The College of Veterinary Medicine has a limited enrollment policy. Selection of the best qualified applicants for admission is the responsibility of a faculty committee within the College. The committee considers applicants who have met the minimum academic requirements including at least three years of study, or its equivalent, at an accredited college. Students normally apply for admission to the College of Veterinary Medicine during their third year of study in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Pre-Veterinary Medicine program. Students not admitted to Veterinary Medicine may continue their study in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences for a fourth year to complete the requirements for the B.S.A. degree in any major they choose. Several degree programs within the College are compatible with the Pre-Veterinary Medicine program. The program of study will meet the dual objectives of completing the requirements for admission to the College of Veterinary Medicine and the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Students should contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Veterinary Medicine, for a more detailed description of requirements for admission to that college.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine (B.S.F.R.)

Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources
Degree Type: Pre-Professional

The Pre-Vet/Wildlife Program in UGA's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources was designed in cooperation with the College of Veterinary Medicine. The Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources (B.S.F.R.) degree in Pre-Vet/Wildlife from the Warnell School integrates concepts from wildlife ecology and management with the rigorous biological, chemical, and physical sciences necessary for admission into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Program, and meets the coursework requirements for certification as an Associate Wildlife Biologist by The Wildlife Society (www.wildlife.org).

Pre-Vet/Wildlife graduates who also complete the DVM degree will be uniquely qualified to work in professional positions that require the integration of veterinary medicine and wildlife management. There are three general areas in which students with this unique training could work:

  • Wildlife-Related Human Health Issues: Of increasing importance to human health are zoonotic diseases, which are diseases that are transmissible from animals to humans. The World Health Organization (www.who.int/en) has concluded that nearly 75% of all infectious diseases classed as "emerging" are zoonotic. These emerging zoonotic diseases have had significant impacts on human health and have increased in prevalence.
  • Wildlife/Human/Domestic-Animal Interface Health Issues: Wildlife professionals, human-health professionals, and veterinary-health professionals do not individually possess all of the expertise required to work in this area. Graduates with Pre-Vet/Wildlife and DVM degrees will have the expertise to address the disease and health challenges presented by the wildlife/human/domestic-animal interface.
  • Ecological Aspects of Wildlife Disease Investigation and Management: Integrative approaches to examining the role of diseases in ecological functions are paramount in today's world. Wildlife graduates who seek a DVM will be on a path for a career in investigation and management of wildlife diseases with an ecological perspective.
Students in the Pre-Vet/Wildlife Program are exposed to state-of-the-art instructional and research experiences in wildlife management and veterinary medicine.

Environmental Health Science

College of Public Health
Degree Type: B.S.E.H.

Environmental health scientists are in demand by private industries, consulting firms, governmental agencies, and institutions. A wide range of opportunities for employment exist in corporate environmental and occupational health departments, public health agencies, solid and hazardous waste management, general sanitation engineering, and pollution control. Environmental health scientists are employed in programs of water and air pollution control, industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, and a variety of other activities by a significant number of agencies and commercial concerns.

The need for environmental health scientists in Georgia is increasing and employment opportunities for academically qualified personnel are increasing proportionately. The demand for trained environmental health scientists, however, is not restricted to the state of Georgia. Due to the limited availability of college training programs for this field, numerous other states rely upon the resources of the University of Georgia for graduates in this subject matter area. Students successfully completing the program of study receive the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health (B.S.E.H.) degree. Students may pursue their interests in the areas of environmental protection, industrial hygiene, or public health. Terry College of Business
Degree Type: B.B.A.

This major offers a background for students planning careers in real estate sales, leasing, management, or appraising. Real Estate is the study of site selection, acquisition (lease or purchase), management and disposition of real property.

Management

Terry College of Business
Degree Type: B.B.A.

A primary objective of the Management major is to help students develop the perspective, the skills, and the knowledge needed to manage and lead the modern organization more effectively. What makes the life of a manager so interesting is that it requires one to address such a wide variety of problems—financial, material, human, legal, political, and environmental—almost every day. No other career provides such a rich mixture of challenges. To be successful under such conditions, students must be able to work with and through groups of people toward a common end and be able to communicate with others (in both written and oral form) the mission, goals, objectives, and direction of the organization which they are chosen to lead. Further, in an increasingly complex and global business environment, students must be able to think creatively with regard to problem solving in all areas of the enterprise. The common program of study for students who are candidates for the Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) offers excellent opportunities to select course work which may well serve a variety of personal development goals in meeting the professional challenges outlined above. Within the Management major itself, the required "Management Core" is designed to provide students with exposure to the central issues and competencies required for managers facing the twenty-first century. Through appropriate selection of major elective courses, students may better prepare for career opportunities that utilize the specialized knowledge and skills offered in more specific areas.

In addition to course work, there are other means of achieving personal developmental needs for a career in management. A primary opportunity is through involvement in any of the many campus organizations such as the Management Society. For a complete listing, stop by the Information Desk at the Tate Center. Because managers are "joiners" and leaders, the best way to develop and demonstrate the qualities necessary for successful management is by joining and by leading whenever and wherever an opportunity occurs. Campus organizations provide just such an opportunity.

The emphasis is placed on the management of information systems so that graduates may ultimately assume managerial positions at the vice-presidential level. In some companies, information systems are of such strategic importance that managers with an MIS background are becoming chief executive officers.

The MIS course work prepares students for a variety of jobs. The program is interdisciplinary in nature with specialized training in information systems, management, and information technology. It builds on the Terry College of Business common core, which includes course work in accounting, economics, legal studies, mathematics, statistics, computer programming, finance, marketing, production, and management. The program's educational objectives are realized through a variety of instructional methods, including "hands-on" computer experience; class lecture and discussion; textbook and article study; class assignments, laboratory projects, and applied team projects in the business community; demonstrations; field trips; and presentations by MIS practitioners.

Specifically, the MIS program requires 21 hours (7 courses) of major course work beyond the TCB common core. Four courses (Computer Programming in Business, Data Management, Systems Analysis and Design, Network-Based Application Development) are taken by all MIS majors. The remaining major courses may be chosen from such areas as Managing the Information System Resources, Network Management, Business Intelligence, Advanced Data Management, Integrated Enterprise-Wide Systems, Project Management, Business Process Management, and Web Application Development with PHP.

Management and International Business Co-Major

Biology

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: B.S.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in biology is a liberal arts degree with a concentration in the biological sciences. A major in biology is valuable because of the important role that biology plays in our everyday lives. An understanding of basic biological principles is crucial in interpreting the implications of environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity, the impact of genetic engineering and biotechnology in crop improvement, the treatment of disease, forensic medicine, and legal and ethical issues associated with the above.

Food Science

College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences
Degree Type: B.S.A.

Food Science is the application of science, technology, and engineering to the study of food materials, ingredients and their products. This knowledge is used by food scientists to make our foods safer, healthier, more tempting and less likely to spoil. Food scientists study biology to understand the natural processes of fresh plant and animal products as they lose freshness. They study chemistry to make sure the vitamins, minerals and proteins in our foods will be available to us when we eat them and to make sure the ingredients in a food are safe and produce the quality we expect. A knowledge of microbiology is needed to understand the causes of food poisoning while math and engineering help food scientists develop ways to treat foods to prevent outbreaks and calculate expiration dates. Analysis of what is in our foods requires knowledge of physics in addition to chemistry and microbiology. After a rigorous background in the basic sciences, food science students apply this knowledge in a series of practical courses that prepare them for careers in the food industry or governmental agencies. Food Science is an excellent major for students who like science but want to see the practical applications of their knowledge. Because it is relatively unknown, Food Science classes tend to be smaller and instructors tend to devote more time to individual students than in the more basic sciences.

Mathematics/Mathematics Education - Dual Degree

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: B.S.

Why major in Mathematics? (Thanks to Dartmouth University, from which this page was "borrowed.)

  • You like it and/or you're good at it. Do you really need another reason? If you need a little more convincing, read on.
  • Professional graduate schools (business, law, medicine) think it's a great major because they realize that studying mathematics develops analytical skills and the ability to work in a problem solving environment; these are skills and experience which rank high on their list of assets.
  • Employers also value skills and abilities developed as a result of the training to be a mathematics major. For example, as part of the Georgia University System Board of Regents survey, ""Business Conditions and Higher Education in Georgia, 1998 Survey Report"", business leaders were asked what three qualities they most valued in their employees. Oral communications (77%) and critical thinking skills (74%) were considered most important. The ability to work in teams (49%) and written communication (41%) were frequently cited. Computer skills (34%) and quantitative skills (23%) were less likely to be named.
  • Jobs in the private sector abound: Whether you're interested in developing models and interpreting their results, or are interested in developing efficient algorithms to expedite known processes, mathematics and computer science are the tools of choice.
  • Models are needed to investigate air flow across the surface of aircraft wings, chemical and biological processes, astronomical trajectories and urban development. These models need to be designed, created, the data from them collected and analyzed, conclusions drawn and predictions made from them.
  • Possibly your interest is in the construction of the model; maybe it's in what the model tells you about the situation being modelled; maybe it's in how to collect and organize the data for analysis, or maybe it's in the analysis of the data itself. Maybe your interest is in developing a system to keep the data secure, or in developing your talents to circumvent the existing security of a data system. Maybe .... well, you get the idea.
  • An academic career, whether in grades 1 – 12 or at the college level, can be an exciting and interactive environment. The opportunity to pursue your own research projects is often not available in the private sector, and is a very important consideration in your choice of career.
  • Finally, in the 1995 National Business Employment Weekly Jobs Rated Almanac, a publication which rates jobs on the basis of job satisfaction, income, security, etc., Mathematics rated sixth out of 250 jobs rated. Many of the other jobs rated higher than Mathematics also involved significant mathematical reasoning and knowledge.

For more information about nonacademic careers in mathematics, please visit http://www.math.uga.edu/undergraduate/careers.html or http://www.math.uga.edu/~shifrin/jobops.html

Mechanical Engineering

College of Engineering
Degree Type: B.S.M.E

Mechanical engineers will pursue diverse careers in areas such as research, design, manufacturing, and management.  Thus mechanical engineers have a great deal of flexibility in the career options after graduation.  Mechanical engineers have helped create the modern society that we enjoy and as well are poised to help provide solutions to the pressing grand challenges that we now face, with environmental problems, energy concerns, and advances in medical technology as but a few examples.
The educational objectives of the Mechanical Engineering program at the University of Georgia are to prepare graduates who, after five years of their professional career, have:

  • Achieved a high level of expertise to create design solutions that help to create a sustainable world and enhance the global quality of life.
  • Established themselves in positions of leadership in their profession and their community.
  • Continued their education through professional licensure, certification, or pursuit of a graduate degree

The program will graduate students ready for successful careers as practicing mechanical engineers and as academics.  Since mechanical engineering is a broad engineering discipline, a graduate in this program will have much flexibility for career options.  While they will be prepared to enter diverse types of careers, these graduates will also leave school with a solid understanding of mechanics and kinematics, thermal and fluid systems, materials and modeling topics.
Several key principles will help distinguish the University of Georgia Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program from others.

  • Key principle #1 "Professional Spine."
A series of seminar courses will be required annually that provide insight into the sense of being a practicing engineer in today's marketplace. Key concepts, such as systems thinking, different topical areas of mechanical engineering, and the professional skills required in today's job market will be included. Each course will have intended goals and objectives and will serve to help guide the student in the transition from high school graduate to an engineer ready to enter the professional workforce. The courses will be primarily a ‘seminar' focus, with assignments, guest speakers and small study topics required.
  • Key principle #2 "Design Spine."
Design courses will be present throughout the curriculum as recommended in the ASME Vision 2030 documentation. Students will participate in a three-hour, project-based design studio during their first and third years. During their second year they will take a course on "Engineering in Society" that involves a service learning project. In their final year students will take a two semester capstone design course with industry-driven projects.
  • Key principle #3 "Co-op or research."
One distinguishing feature of this program will be the option to include either engineering co-op (MCHE 3900) or undergraduate research experience, such as MCHE 4960 or the CURO program (MCHE 4980), as credit toward one of the electives related to the profession. Substitution credit will only be allowed with a minimum of two semesters of participation, and three credit hours total, in either an approved engineering cooperative experiential learning program or research program. For further requirements on the process and procedures for obtaining credit toward an elective, the student should check with the College of Engineering co-op and CURO program description documents.
  • Key Principle #4 "Electives Related to Profession."
A set of two elective courses that allows a student to diversify in topical areas beyond mechanical engineering but still very much relevant to their profession. The courses could be technical but non-engineering courses (for example "Occupational Safety") or non-technical (for example a foreign language). Co-op (MCHE 3900) or research (MCHE 4960 or 4980) courses can be used to satisfy this requirement, as outlined in Key Principle #3. These courses will give students flexibility to tailor their education for a career path that the curriculum designers cannot envision in advance.

Sociology

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: A.B.

The Sociology major is designed to teach undergraduate students the sociological perspective, which has three central aspects. The first is the recognition of the preeminence of social structures and their influences, and of micro- and macro-level social processes. The second is the role of logic and of the scientific method in the acquisition of knowledge. The final aspect is the enduring link between the individual's experience and larger social processes.

In achieving its purpose, the Sociology curriculum provides repeated experiences wherein students pose sociological questions and bring data to bear on them, making full use of computer technologies. Courses underscore the centrality of race, class, gender and culture in society and in sociological analysis. In the process, they expose students to comparative and international materials. More generally, the major develops student capacity for abstract thought, and for effective written and oral communication.

Study Abroad Options: Third- and fourth-year students may study sociology abroad and receive credits toward their majors.

Management Information Systems and International Business Co-Major

Terry College of Business
Degree Type: B.B.A.

The Department of Management's undergraduate program in MIS is designed to educate future information systems professionals and managers. The program is not designed to train students to be computer scientists, programmers, or technicians.

Geology (A.B.)

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: A.B.

The Department of Geology offers three degree tracks, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree, and the Geology Minor.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program involves a broad curriculum that prepares students for employment immediately after graduation or for more advanced graduate study in the geosciences. For those students that pursue advanced degrees in geoscience, the undergraduate major prepares them for a wide range of fields, including hydrology and environmental geology, geochemistry and biogeochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, structural geology and tectonics, stratigraphy and sedimentary geology, paleontology, economic geology, geophysics, and archaeological geology.

The Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) program is designed for students who desire a more flexible program of study than is provided by the B.S. degree. It may be used by those seeking a more liberal education or a background in geology for use in other fields. It is also a popular choice for students wishing to pursue Geology as a second major. The A.B. degree is not intended to prepare a student for professional or graduate work in geosciences unless the student takes the additional courses in mathematics, chemistry, and physics required for the B.S. degree. Because many of the requirements are the same for the B.S. and A.B. degrees, if a students starts in the A.B. program and decides at a later time to switch to the B.S., this is generally easy to do.

The Geology minor is intended for students who wish to supplement their major fields with additional background in selected areas of geoscience, depending on the interests of the student. The minor is ideal for students pursuing careers in other fields that benefit from additional understanding of earth resources, natural hazards, and the environment, such as anthropology, biosciences, business, education, geography, journalism, law, or public policy.

Lab and Field Exercises Core classes involve extensive lab work that provides crucial hands-on experience. Field exercises are standard in most core classes and form an indispensable link between lectures and real world observations and analyses. Students may examine coastal processes and organisms on Georgia's barrier islands, the outstanding mineral assemblages at Grave's Mountain in the Inner Piedmont, major fault systems in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the rich fossil assemblages and ancient depositional environments preserved in rocks of the Valley and Ridge and Cumberland Plateau.

Summer Field Courses Some courses take place entirely in the field, including the department's six-week summer field school (required for the B.S. and the A.B. degree), based in Canon City, Colorado. Projects include field mapping in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, pollution monitoring of streams in the Colorado Plateau, and field trips to Utah and New Mexico. Students gain valuable experience with traditional and computer-based mapping tools, with GIS, and with geochemical analyses. Other, optional, summer field programs include the Honors Interdisciplinary Summer Field Program in Geology, Anthropology, and Ecology, and the study-abroad program in Argentina.

Turfgrass Management

College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences
Degree Type: B.S.A.

Turfgrass management is a major focused on the science and culture of grasses—whether they’re growing on golf courses, athletic fields, home lawns or other areas. Without turfgrass experts, the University of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium wouldn’t look as great for football games, golf courses wouldn’t be as green, home lawns wouldn’t be as manicured, and soccer fields would be more dirt than turf.

You’ll take classes jointly taught by faculty from the crop and soil sciences and horticulture departments, giving you the opportunity to learn from great minds in both of these plant-focused disciplines. You’ll also have access to laboratories, teaching equipment and demonstration field plots. Through the turfgrass management major, you’ll learn the principles and applications of applied and basic sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on learning environmentally sound strategies for controlling common turfgrass weeds, insects and diseases.

Comparative Literature

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: A.B.

Comparative Literature is the study of literary works from different cultures. The English Department, for example, teaches literature written in English, just as the German Department teaches only literature written in German. Comparative Literature does not limit itself to a single culture or language. Here you will study world literature. You will study the literature of one language or culture in relation to literature from another. You will compare literary works and traditions and ask questions like “What does the Japanese novel have to do with the English novel or the Russian novel?” and “What connects literature with visual art?” We live today in a global society where languages, literatures and cultures intersect and interbreed, and that is why it is important to broaden our scope.

In comparative literature classes, you will read works in translation. We offer courses in the literature and culture of Europe and America, of China, Japan and Korea, and of East and West Africa. We also teach multiple languages, from introductory to advanced levels: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Swahili, Vietnamese, and Yoruba.

Whether you want to become a lawyer, a businessperson, a writer or a humanities professor, Comparative Literature will provide you with important skills—such as critical thinking, writing, and effective oral communication—which will help you achieve your professional goals. Every humanities degree will give you that of course, but Comparative Literature will allow you to analyze and understand culture on a global scale.

German

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: A.B.

The German major is designed to provide students with communicative proficiency in the German language and competency in the interpretation of German culture. Following the completion of basic requirements, the program offers optimal flexibility to the individual student who can choose from a variety of courses and, under the guidance of a faculty mentor, devise a curriculum geared towards his or her specific career goals and intellectual interests. The department is comprised of specialists in the major areas of German Studies who integrate language teaching with the teaching of German literature, linguistics, film, and culture studies as well as important aspects of contemporary German society, business, and politics.

The study of German in the United States has undergone significant changes in recent years, and the German program at the University of Georgia reflects those changes by offering intermediate and advanced German courses that cover broad subject areas but generally are not literary survey or genre courses. Instead, the focus of a course may be a specific issue or a topic that students learn to investigate in depth or from a particular perspective. Through such courses students acquire the critical tools to undertake independent inquiries into the field of German and form their own questions about cultural specificity and difference. While either German literature or linguistics constitutes the core of these courses, they are frequently interdisciplinary and include materials and methods from other fields such as history, music, film, philosophy, art history, and sociology.

Although the University and the department strongly encourage study abroad and offer opportunities for its pursuit in Bamberg, Erlangen, Heidelberg, and Rostock, we recognize that many students will not be able to stay in Germany for extended periods of time during or after their course of study. The program of study is therefore not limited to analyzing specific aspects of German culture, but generally intended to sharpen students' critical skills and strengthen their ability to express themselves. It is also designed to raise students' cross-cultural awareness, to help them realize the uniqueness of their own background and understand it as socially and historically constructed.

Women's Studies

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: A.B.

Women's Studies is an emerging field of scholarship that provides interdisciplinary perspectives on women, gender, and sexual orientation. In the past 30 years, scholars in many fields have recovered lost works and have provided new perspectives on the diversity of women's experiences and accomplishments, thereby transforming and expanding traditional curricula. At UGA, women's studies courses are taught by ten faculty members with joint appointments in the Women's Studies Program and eight other departments, and by other faculty from cooperating departments in several schools and colleges. Thus, students take courses with WMST and many other prefixes. (Because courses are not limited to those appearing in OASIS with the WMST prefix, it is important that students check with the program advisor each term for the full range of approved courses.) Students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences may major in women's studies. (Majors are required to minor or recommended to double major in another field.) Students in any school or college may pursue a minor in women's studies. All Women's Studies students are encouraged to join the Women's Studies Student Organization (WSSO) which meets regularly for educational programs and social events. The annual Women's Studies Student Symposium draws participants from across campus. Planning for National Women's History Month in March provides undergraduates further opportunities for developing their organizational skills. The Friday Noon Speaker Series offers an additional extracurricular means for deepening understanding of women's issues, perspectives, and contributions.

Criminal Justice

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
Degree Type: A.B.

Criminal Justice at UGA is an undergraduate program that has been in operation since 1977. The program offers an A.B. in Criminal Justice. Criminal Justice at UGA operates as an interdisciplinary program and draws its courses from cooperating departments. These include Political Science in the School of Public and International Affairs and Psychology, Sociology and other departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to coordinating this interdisciplinary curriculum, the Criminal Justice Studies Program offers a variety of services and programs for students. These include newsletters, new major orientation meetings, career seminars, and alumni networking opportunities, among others. Additionally, undergraduate student organizations offer various programs for student members (Criminal Justice Society, UGA Chapter of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma).

Study Abroad Options: The Criminal Justice Studies Program does not directly sponsor any study abroad programs, but encourages C.J. majors to take advantage of opportunities to study abroad when possible. Since the C.J. degree is interdisciplinary, with curriculum drawn from various social science departments in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and in the School of Public and International Affairs, several programs administered by other units allow a C.J. major to earn study abroad credit that could possibly be incorporated into the major course of study. C.J. majors planning study abroad should consult the CJSP academic advisor for guidance on whether credit for any study abroad courses could be counted in the C.J. major.
