Overview

French is the official language of 29 countries and spoken as a primary language by an estimated 338 million people.

Students majoring in French through the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia take courses that combine the study of language, literature, culture, and linguistics, leading to a development of language proficiency and an understanding of the French-speaking world.  Students are encouraged to participate in an accredited study abroad program for an academic year, semester, or the summer.

Many students majoring in French become teachers or go on to graduate school, but proficiency in a foreign language also helps majors find employment in the public and private sectors.  Professions are available in international business, banking, trade, travel, interpretation, social media, and many others.
