Overview

The major in Accounting at UGA is designed to give students an understanding of the theory of accounting as it is used in our society: accounting standards, financial statement preparation, product costs, budgeting, taxation, auditing, risk assessment, and controls.  (Refer to the Pre-Business major for information on applying to the Accounting program.)

Faculty include the former editor and co-editor of The Accounting Review (the top academic journal in accounting), the former president of the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association, a former trustee of the American Taxation Association, and others.  

The program consistently ranks in top 5% for CPA first time pass rates and boasts an effective career services and job placement rate of over 90%.  Graduates are well-prepared for accounting careers in private, public, or governmental organizations and non-business professions such as law or top-level management.

Accountants and Auditors

Accountants and auditors prepare and examine financial records. They ensure that financial records are accurate and that taxes are paid properly and on time. Accountants and auditors assess financial operations and work to help ensure that organizations run efficiently.

Tax Examiners and Collectors, and Revenue Agents

Tax examiners and collectors, and revenue agents determine how much is owed in taxes and collect tax from individuals and businesses on behalf of federal, state, and local governments. They review tax returns, conduct audits, identify taxes owed, and collect overdue tax payments.
